Independence day celebrations, Trini style...

Sunday 31st August, Independence day itself, I celebrated in what I believe to be a uniquely Trini way...

  • 1.30am got up
  • 2.00am donned white
  • 3.00am jumped into a maxi with eardrum ripping soca playing
  • 3.30am got to the beautiful Tyrico beach with soft rolling waves... in the rain
  • 3.40am ate, drank, danced
  • 4.30am doused myself and others in black and red paint
  • 6.00am sang heartily along to national anthem played on steel pan
  • 6.01am got covered in pink and blue powder
  • 6.05am ate, drank, danced some more
  • 7.45am went into the sea, jumping waves in time to the rhythm section
  • 8.05am slept all the way back up North Coast road
  • 9.30am fought way through Independence Day parade traffic
  • 10.00am collapsed into bed
  • 1.00pm fed kids, ate, hydrated, rested (repeated several times..)
  • 8.30pm watched fireworks from son's bedroom window (impressive - they seem to have upped their game.

Monday 1st September, the Independence day public holiday entailed a different type of exertion.
Toyota Independence Day Ride

  • 4.30am woke up
  • 5.45am headed down to the Toyota showroom in Barataria
  • 6.30am set off on a 50km bike ride south...
  • 9.00am reached Toyota showroom in San Fernando
  • 9.30am left San Fernando and fought way back a further 50k, up a hilly highway with help of a saviour who met me after about half an hour and pushed me up every hill thereafter
  • 11.30am got back to Barataria, exhilarated having ridden 100km!!

A phenomenal way to end the vacation and feel truly alive!

Happy Independence everyone!!
