One of my memories of the Caribbean as a child living in England where nature tends to be pretty quiet most of the time are of the cacophonous nights. At a certain hour around dusk, when the sun drops out of the sky at an alarming rate, the crickets go berserk often joined by frogs and various other insects. Mornings too can be quite dramatic, especially if you live near a large flock of wild green parrots who squawk merrily away, calling to their true loves as apparently they mate for life.
Although now, with the prevalence of airconditioning, the astounding noises of nature are often silenced or even drowned out by the hum of the compressor; at times, generally at dusk, I suddenly become aware of nature's orchestra tuning up and starting to passionately perform it's signature symphony. At that moment my heart sings with a mixture of nostalgia and amazed gratitude that I actually now live here, in a place where various natural forces are so powerful and assertive, one tends to retain a healthy respect.
Your writing continues to amaze me. I love the sounds of nature, especially in the evening time. :)
ReplyDeleteThe atmosphere becomes thick, doesn't it.....so different from in the Kent Countryside at my mother's house where it is just silent!
